Dukling in Victoria Harbour

Dukling Mast

There are many ways to cruise Victoria Harbour. A unique way to do so is on board a junk called 鴨靈 Dukling. Junks are sailing vessels with massive masts. Their origin dates as far back as 200 AD. They were used for trades extensively until the nineteenth century. Dukling was built in 1955 and used for fishing. Today, it is the only operating antique junk in Hong Kong.

As Dukling passed by Avenue of Stars, a crew member told us how much he loved his job – sailing every day while showing tourists Victoria Harbour. Pointing towards the cinematography inspired bronze statues on Avenue of Stars, he said “I like this stretch. It’s fun. When you wave at them, they wave back.” I looked out in the direction he pointed, smiled, and fell silent for a moment. My friend, Ana, nudged me and said: “He’s talking about the tourists, not the bronze statues.” It’s amazing how well she knows me.
