Good Bye, Tivoli Park

Tivoli Park was an amusement park in Kurashiki, Okayama inspired by Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. Behind its gates, there were cobblestoned streets, topiaries, and buildings of all kinds – from European style houses to a Taj Mahal inspired castle. There were also classic rides like spinning teacups and carousel. At night, all the structures and paths would be lit up in colorful lights. It opened on July 18, 1997, and closed on December 31, 2008.

I know things change over time. It’s still shocking to see a whole amusement park with its Ferris Wheel and attractions just disappeared and replaced by a shopping mall. All there’s left of it now is the Andersen Square outside of Kurashiki Station and the whimsical lamp posts.
